The single greatest lesson the garden teaches is that our relationship to the planet need not be zero-sum, and that as long as the sun still shines and people still can plan and plant, think and do, we can, if we bother to try, find ways to provide for ourselves without diminishing the world.
— Michael Pollan, The Omnivore's Dilemma

About Food Choices

If you are fortunate to have access to today's food universe deciding what to eat where to eat and how often to eat can be daunting. But it does not have to be. Below you will find three categories of food lover remember you control what goes into your mouth. Are you a A. Omnivore  = will eat just about anything which tastes good to you? B. Carnivore = prefer meat and eat it with almost every meal? C. Flexitarian = eat majority fruits and vegetables but eat anything with a face when in the company of others? D. A new category which you will learn about shortly a Reducitarian, someone who is trying  to live green but satisfy their tastebuds via ABC on weekends? E. Vegetarian = eat fruit, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and animal by products? F. Vegan = plant based diet only?

Reducitarian

Making the choice to be vegetarian or vegan is hard. Like many people in the US, I grew up in a loving house hold where meat was consumed on a daily basis. Although fresh vegetables were always present on our table ( my people were famous neighborhood gardeners ) it was meat and meat by product which took center stage. Yesterday it was hard to eliminate meat from your diet. Today it is easy and necessary to enjoy continued good health. I attended a Animal Law Conference at Lewis and Clark and during a HUSU panel a discussion of Free Range Chickens ensued. Flabbergasted that such a ridiculous talk could be set forward by ( well meaning people ) I asked: What is the point? Whether free range or not the chickens  die violent deaths the point of this discussion should be how to get people to stop eating chickens period not how they live"

1. Consciously realize your daily diet, this discovery might save your life. 2. Prepare to make a life changing decisions.

Vegetarian

After viewing a PBS documentary which focused on how a lack of FDA Inspectors influenced our food chain which then brought attention to the hellish life suffered by factory farm animals my decision to become vegetarian was cemented. Today I am vegan ( my love affair with cheese ended when I realized I did not want any animal to exist for the appeasement of my tastebuds ).

I realize fresh vegetables and hearty meals which include fresh fruit are not available to everyone ( absence of Farmers Markets ). Twenty years after I stopped "eating anything with a face" I enjoy excellent health and astute mental cognition. Please keep in mind that you also, ingest what  the animals you consume have digested, more from PEW.

Fast food chains, restaurants. schools and food trucks offer vegan options. Veganism is about being aware of the global market place and the implications a single purchase of a meat or plant based product has on the market place / the environment health and the lives of animals.
