"Occasionally I have come across a last patch of snow on top of a mountain in late May or early June. There's something very powerful about finding snow in summer." Andy Goldsworthy
School is out, summer is finally here. Now that you have some time on your hands, the fun starts now:
Join a summer theatre troupe. Act your way into someones heart:) This can be a fun outlet which brings you to places you have not seen, introduce you to people you would have otherwise not met and allow you to learn about a part of you, you may not have thought existed, your thespian side. Additional benefits of community theatre groups area turning grey area's green by returning a space which might have seen better days back into an eco-friendly indoor or out door theatre. ( check out Funds page for additional resources ).
Untangle your new community green space. It is the unfortunate circumstance of many urban areas to have, what was once a gem, now is hidden behind tangles of branches, thorns and prickles. The summer heat makes uncovering these spaces more a challenge but well worth the work and planning involved. Create a Facebook page, share information about the history of the place you wish to make useful again. Garner support of neighbors, local politicians and community leaders there are a plethora of benefits when you green it live it and sustain it:)
Nestled inside of every city are well known secret spaces. In New York City for example there are neighborhood gardens - open to the public where visitors can find a welcome respite from Summer in the City.
Eat, your on vacation ( or planning to be ). Learn a new part of the city, plan a city wide treasure hunt for old recipe books. Prepare a fun meal with your kids and invite their friends. Find a vacation rental invite friends or colleagues and make eating the center piece of your gathering - every loves food. Try a new dish and or vegetable at the farmers market. While some farmers markets stay open all year long others open in June welcoming the summer with festivities to delight the whole family. For me June is the start of magical season of travel, reading, eating and uncovering old gems, which have been hidden by the bramble of indifference and with the help of friends, family and neighbors turning grey to green. See you in July:)
3. The internet is a convenient way to locate old recipe books but the fun is in going to a book store. One of the most pleasurable ways to spend time is to forage in a ( brick and mortar ) book store. Attend a book sale or book fundraiser for old books especially recipe books where you will find that peoples likes are more common than their dislikes when it comes to food which would be a fun challenge for you and or your book club to have a treasure hunt to raise money for a local shelter or community garden:)
